"Rules".....Are made to be broken?
Can I make my own design rules? eg. use only 3 seams to construct my final jacket??
"Layers"..... Does this only apply to the construction or can they be apart of the exterior???
Many things to consider, evaluate, eliminate and go with....
The research question as design generator is a good way to go. You are asking a few questions here, now you need to attempt some answers through designing. MP
